This bucket drumming program is designed for primary students (ages 6 – 9). Dragonfly Drumming uses a unique set of tools (rhythmic word cues, visual/audio supports) and a scaffolded method to help young students learn and play rhythm. Using a step-by-step approach, the projectable and printable resource includes everything a teacher needs to easily guide students through the program, from warmups to performances.

Themed around the dragonfly, the unique rhythmic word cues ease students into the world of rhythm in a way that looks and sounds familiar to them. Students will develop several skills, including the ability to decode musical notation, the development of right and left hand sticking coordination, and the internalization of rhythmic patterns. When it’s time to perform, students will be natural and confident bucket drummers.

Included in this 70-page resource are preparatory warm-up exercises for each song, a conductor’s full score for each of three songs, and a section-by-section version of the score to help “chunk” the learning process into more manageable sections.

It’s worth noting that the Dragonfly Drumming program can also be used as a quick introduction or review of basic bucket drumming ensemble skills for older students in grades 4 and 5. While experienced musicians will appreciate the clear and sequential path of this program, teachers new to drumming will find that this resource is an accessible entry to bucket drumming. Teachers with little or no background in drumming will learn along with their students.
